What Can You Put in a Dumpster? Accepted and Prohibited Items in Florida

A clear list of what goes and what does not go in a roll-off dumpster in Florida, from the local company that hauls and disposes of it.

Most household debris, construction materials, furniture, and yard waste can go in a roll-off dumpster. Florida prohibits hazardous waste, automotive fluids, tires, batteries, propane tanks, and paint. At Yankee Dumpster we also cannot take dirt, concrete, asbestos, appliances, electronics, engines, or fuel; those need special landfills and a different disposal path. When in doubt, call before loading. Prohibited items can result in extra fees or a rejected load.

This guide covers Florida specifically, and rules can vary slightly by hauler and municipality. It comes from Yankee Dumpster, a locally owned company based in Mt Dora that has to haul and dispose of every load we pick up. If you are unsure about a specific item, call us at (352) 738-6748 before you load it. That one call can save you a contamination fee or a rejected trip.

Accepted

What CAN go in a dumpster?

Most users are just confirming their materials are fine, so here is the short answer first. The following categories are generally accepted in a roll-off dumpster in Florida:

Accepted CategoryExamples and Notes
General household junkFurniture, clothing, toys, boxes, general clutter
Construction debrisDrywall, lumber, flooring, roofing shingles, insulation
Yard wasteBranches, leaves, grass clippings, shrubs (see the note below on Florida rules)
Mattresses and box springsGenerally accepted in a roll-off; check with the hauler
Metal and scrapPipes, fencing, wire
Carpet and flooringLaminate, tile, hardwood, carpet rolls

Note on yard waste: Florida does not prohibit yard waste in roll-off dumpsters, but some haulers separate it. Call us to confirm how yard debris should be loaded on your rental. Dirt and soil are a different story: we cannot take them.

Note on concrete and dirt: Yankee Dumpster does not haul concrete or dirt at all. They are so dense that they overload trucks and containers, and they follow a different disposal path than standard debris. See our concrete and heavy debris guide for what to do with them instead.

Prohibited

What CANNOT go in a dumpster? Prohibited items in Florida

The following items are prohibited in a roll-off dumpster in Florida. Each one is restricted for a reason, and loading it can cause a delay, a fee, or a rejected load.

Prohibited ItemWhy It Is Not Accepted
TiresFlorida law prohibits whole-tire disposal in standard landfills; they require special recycling processing
Paint (liquid)Hazardous material; both latex and oil-based are prohibited. Dried or empty cans are typically fine
Motor oil, gasoline, automotive fluidsFlammable and classified as hazardous waste under Florida law
Car batteries / lead-acid batteriesHazardous; Florida has specific battery recycling requirements
Propane tanks (any size)Explosive; prohibited by law and a liability risk
Asbestos-containing materialsRequires licensed abatement and special disposal; Yankee will not haul asbestos
Medical waste, sharps, biohazardsRegulated waste stream; requires a licensed medical waste contractor
Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicalsClassified as hazardous; prohibited
Dirt and concreteWe cannot haul dirt or concrete; they overload containers and follow a different disposal path
ElectronicsComputers, TVs, and monitors go to special landfills, kept separate from a standard dump site
AppliancesWashers, dryers, fridges, stoves, and AC units go to special landfills; call and we will help with next steps
Engines and fuelEngines and any fuel are hazardous and require special-facility disposal

Paint, fuel, engines, electronics, and appliances all have to go to special landfills, in a completely different stream from a standard dump site. If you have these items to get rid of, call us and we will help guide you through the next steps. Loading a prohibited item can result in an additional fee, a load being rejected at the landfill and returned to you, or both. Yankee’s team will let you know if we spot a prohibited item on pickup. When in doubt, call (352) 738-6748 before loading. For the official hazardous-waste categories, see the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. EPA hazardous waste guidance.

Disposal facility where Yankee Dumpster hauls and sorts loads, where prohibited items can trigger a rejected load

Can you put tires in a dumpster in Florida?

No, tires cannot go in a roll-off dumpster in Florida. Florida law prohibits whole tires in landfills. Auto shops, tire retailers, and county solid waste facilities accept tires for proper recycling. Do not place tires in a rented dumpster; the load may be rejected and you may be charged a return fee.

Can you put paint in a dumpster?

Liquid paint is prohibited in a rental dumpster in Florida. This applies to both latex and oil-based paint, which are classified as hazardous materials. Dried, fully hardened paint or empty paint cans with dried residue are generally accepted. If you have liquid paint to dispose of, contact your county hazardous waste collection program.

Can you put a mattress in a dumpster in Florida?

Yes, mattresses are generally accepted in a roll-off dumpster. There is no Florida-specific prohibition on mattress disposal in standard landfills. Check with us about any size or weight surcharge when you book. Keep in mind that a king mattress can weigh 100 to 200 pounds, which matters if your rental is near its weight capacity.

Can you put electronics or appliances in a dumpster?

Not in a Yankee Dumpster rental. Electronics and appliances have to go to special landfills, kept in a completely different part from a standard dump site, so we cannot haul them in a roll-off. If you have electronics or appliances that need to go, call us and we will help guide you through the next steps. The EPA’s electronics recycling resources can also point you to drop-off options.

What happens if you put a prohibited item in a dumpster?

If a prohibited item ends up in the load, a few things can happen. The disposal facility may flag the load and return it, charging you a return trip and sorting fee. The rental company may charge a contamination fee if hazardous materials are found. For some materials, like asbestos and medical waste, improper disposal carries legal penalties under Florida law. The fix is simple: call before you load if you are unsure.

Weight limits and heavy materials

Roll-off dumpsters have a weight limit per rental, and some materials hit that limit fast. Every Yankee rental includes a weight allowance: 2 tons on the 15 yard, 3 tons on the 20 yard, and 4 tons on the 30 and 40 yard. Overage beyond that is $75 per ton. Dense debris like roofing shingles and tile adds up quickly, so a container that looks half full can still be near its limit. The heaviest materials of all, dirt and concrete, are not accepted in our containers at any quantity.
