Dumpster Size Guide: Which Size Is Right for Your Project?

Compare all four roll-off sizes side by side and find the right fit for your project. Locally owned, serving Orlando, Mt Dora, and all of Central Florida.

What size dumpster do I need?

The right dumpster size depends on your project. A 15-yard container handles garage cleanouts, bathroom remodels, and most standard kitchen remodels (roughly 5 to 6 pickup truck loads). A 20-yard covers roof replacements, larger kitchen remodels, and estate cleanouts (8 to 10 loads). A 30-yard fits large multi-room renovations. A 40-yard is for commercial sites and full demolitions. When in doubt, go one size larger: a second trip costs more than unused space.

How dumpster sizes work (and what “yard” actually means)

A “yard” in dumpster rental means a cubic yard: the volume of a 3 foot by 3 foot by 3 foot cube. So a 20-yard dumpster holds 20 of those cubes worth of material. The number refers to volume, not the length of the container.

Every Yankee Dumpster roll-off has walk-in barn doors, so you load from the front instead of throwing debris over the side. That makes loading easier on every size, which matters most when the container is nearly full. And because we are locally owned and locally run, when you call you talk to someone who knows the trucks, not a national call center.

Which dumpster size do you need?

Small residential jobs (garage cleanout, small bathroom, junk removal)

Best fit: 15 yard. One small truck-full of old furniture and boxes fits a 15-yard with room to spare. Most standard kitchen remodels and full bathroom guts also fit a 15-yard. See 15-yard dumpster rental details or a garage cleanout dumpster rental.

Mid-size jobs (roof replacement, larger kitchen remodel, estate cleanout)

Best fit: 20 yard, our most-rented size. Shingles from an average Florida roof typically fit with room for underlayment and flashings. Kitchen remodels run 15 to 20 yards depending on the kitchen, and most standard kitchens fit a 15-yard. See 20-yard dumpster rental details, roofing dumpster rental in Orlando, or an estate cleanout dumpster rental.

Large renovation or multi-room remodel

Best fit: 30 yard. When you are gutting multiple rooms at once, a 20-yard fills faster than expected; the 30-yard gives you margin. See 30-yard dumpster rental details or our home renovation dumpster rental.

Commercial, construction, or full demolition

Best fit: 40 yard. The largest container on the lot, used by GCs and commercial property owners for full-structure debris. See 40-yard dumpster rental details, commercial dumpster rental, or construction dumpster rental.

What fits in each dumpster (in plain language)

Most people picture truckloads, not cubic yards. A standard F-150 pickup bed holds roughly 1.5 to 2 cubic yards of loosely loaded material. Using that as the benchmark:

  • 15 yard: about 5 to 6 pickup truck loads
  • 20 yard: about 8 to 10 pickup truck loads
  • 30 yard: about 12 to 15 pickup truck loads
  • 40 yard: about 16 to 20 pickup truck loads

Weight limits apply regardless of volume. Heavy materials like shingles reach the weight limit before they fill the space, so a container that looks half full can still be overweight. We do not accept dirt or concrete at all. See what can go in a dumpster (FL guide) and our dumpster rental pricing and costs for overage context.

Does weight matter? (tonnage and overage fees)

Every dumpster has a weight allowance included in the rental price. Exceeding that allowance triggers a $75 per ton overage charge. Certain materials (tile and shingles) are far heavier per cubic yard than household junk, and we cannot accept dirt or concrete at all. If your project involves heavy debris, we can advise which size is right before you book.

Included weight allowances

Every rental includes 7 days and a weight allowance: 2 tons on the 15 yard, 3 tons on the 20 yard, and 4 tons on the 30 and 40 yard. Overages are billed at $75 per ton. Questions about your load? Call (352) 738-6748 with your material types and project.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about dumpster sizes

What size dumpster do I need for a garage cleanout?

For most single-car or double-car garage cleanouts, a 15-yard dumpster is sufficient. It holds roughly 5 to 6 pickup truck loads of old furniture, boxes, and accumulated junk. If the garage doubles as a storage unit with years of accumulation, step up to a 20-yard for margin. Call us and describe what you are clearing and we will tell you which size makes sense.

What size dumpster do I need for a roof replacement?

A 20-yard dumpster handles most standard Florida residential roof replacements. For larger homes or tile roofs, which are significantly heavier per square, a 30-yard may be needed. Weight limits matter more than volume on roofing jobs because shingles are dense. See our 20-yard and 30-yard pages for details.

How many pickup truck loads fit in a 20-yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster holds approximately 8 to 10 standard pickup truck loads, using an F-150-size bed as the reference. The exact number depends on how tightly material is loaded and the density of the debris. Light household junk stacks more loosely than construction debris.

How many tons can a dumpster hold?

Every rental includes a weight allowance: 2 tons on the 15 yard, 3 tons on the 20 yard, and 4 tons on the 30 and 40 yard, with overages billed at $75 per ton. Heavy materials like roofing tiles reach the weight limit before filling the container by volume, and we do not accept dirt or concrete at all. If your project involves heavy debris, call (352) 738-6748 before booking so we can recommend the right size.

What is the difference between a 15-yard and a 20-yard dumpster?

A 15-yard dumpster is ideal for smaller single-room projects: a garage cleanout, a bathroom remodel, most standard kitchen remodels, or a small junk-removal job. A 20-yard is the most commonly rented size and handles mid-size residential jobs including roof replacements, larger kitchen remodels, and estate cleanouts. If your project is borderline, go up a size; paying for unused space is cheaper than a second trip.
